Please help to make your images useful!
[edit]Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. To find good categories for your images, the CommonsSense tool may help.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 00:47, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Different images
[edit]Hello, please don't upload an image with a completely other motif under an already existing file name. It would be nice if you could re-upload your version of Image:Preferences-desktop.svg with a new name. The original coloured image is used on several projects, and if you change the content (the motiv) it changes there too, of course. Thanks for your understanding. Greetings --Überraschungsbilder 11:26, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps it was a mistake Linuxerist? I don't think the image you uploaded exists on Commons, so you might want to upload it under another name? --Ysangkok 20:46, 11 May 2007 (UTC)
Your UNIX-category image.
[edit]I saw you replaced my unix-category image on wikipedia :) Thanks, the version I was made was made with php and gdlib as I did not have a graphical envirorment back then, so I'm glad someone replaced it :) However, I see you've included the xml on the image page. This is plainly wrong. Yes, GPL requires source, but image and source is one - as it is with a python script or a shell script. I'm not going to remove it, but I'd like to encourage you to remove the code from the description page, since it is not needed. 83.108.118.78 19:31, 23 April 2006 (UTC) Note: I'm vidarlo on the en wikipedia, And I'd be glad if you replied at My talk page there
Image Tagging Image:Xbox and controller.jpeg
[edit]- No problem... I was patrolling recent changes. Maybe I need to be less quick on the trigger! Cary "Bastique" Bass parler voir 02:15, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed your question at User talk:Bastique#Grr. Yes, it's possible to have text not show in the "File history" but still be in the initial page code. Just do the following:
Real upload summary, to show in the history <followed by 256 spaces>
This stuff on the second line won't appear in the file history, but will go on the page.
- The reason is that the file history only shows the first 256 characters of your upload summary. Of course, that's not very convenient; I never do it. I just do what you do, apply the tag afterwards. I've gotten deletion warnings, too. Don't worry, no one's keeping score! ;) User:dbenbenn 03:27, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion, though I think I will merely continue the way I have. There needs to be a different box in my opinion for the file history note. Also, thanks for tagging Image:Xbox 01b.jpg as Commons, but I found in the XBOX cat, there was Image:Xbox 01b.jpg. How should I go about deleting this? Sorry for my noobness, but I am new to Commons really. ~Linuxerist L / T 10:52, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I removed the speedy deletion tag and put it on Template:Deletion_requests#Image:Comedyfilm.jpg. You may be right but I don't think it makes it speedy criterion... so, please comment there. Thanks. gren 03:14, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Sorry in progress.jpeg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Sorry in progress.jpeg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Anarchy symbol a little inaccurate.
[edit]Hey there.
This is a fine rendition of the typical anarchy symbol. However, I have created a Christian Anarchy symbol to be more accurate in representing the, well obviously, Christian Anarchy.
I cannot figure out how to have my symbol displayed on the Wikipedia page 'Christian Anarchism'.
Can you help?

File source is not properly indicated: Image:Start-here.svg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, Image:Start-here.svg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.- Image:Coa coins.jpg was uncategorized on 6 September 2009.

How to make SVG images?
[edit]Dear Linuxerist,
I would like to know you make SVG images. You are the owner of the file Airport Symbol , so it means you are the creator. Please tell me how I can do so, do I need a software? Can I do it on Wikimedia?
I would be very grateful to you if you told me.
Thanks. Rihazrihazrihaz (talk) 11:57, 16 October 2011 (UTC)
A script in your user namespace may stop working in February 2012
[edit]Hi Linuxerist~commonswiki,
I found the deprecated function akeytt
somewhere in your user-namespace, e.g. Special:MyPage/monobook.js, . It is likely that this will cause JavaScript errors after Commons is updated to MediaWiki 1.19 in February. You can simply remove this function-call as it currently does nothing. If you have a copy of user-messages in your script, you may remove it and instead activate User Messages in your preferences. Please also note that addLink is now natively supported by mw.util.addPortletLink. Thank you.

Copyright status: File:Eye drawing.svg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Eye drawing.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Linuxerist. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Linuxerist~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
