Universities struggle to cover the full cost of research. This is a long-term issue, highlighted in last year’s Nurse review of the UK research landscape, but it is becoming more acute.
Data published by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) in November showed that the gap between the full cost of university research and institutions’ research-related income had grown by 14 per cent in the past five years, reaching £5 billion in 2021-22.
