EU space security strategy assigns prominent role to R&D

Commission says Horizon Europe R&D programme should be “fully leveraged” for space defence aims

R&D has been given a prominent role in the European Commission’s new EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence, which aims to make the bloc more resilient to space-based hostilities from rival powers.

Published on 10 March, the strategy says that the EU’s research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, and its European Defence Fund should be “fully leveraged” to secure the bloc’s space infrastructure and capabilities.
