Universities must lead the way to net-zero

Institutions can provide both inspiration and expertise on climate change, says Jim McDonald

Now that the dust is settling on COP26 and the world picks over the detailed text of the Glasgow Climate Pact, it is time for the research and innovation community to take stock and reflect on what more we can do. 

Research and innovation have already given us incontrovertible proof of the reality of the climate crisis. And research and innovation are giving us the tools to tackle it—from low- and zero-carbon energy systems to greener manufacturing processes, and the understanding of how to deliver a just transition. World leaders and governments have come together to respond and it is clear that all organisations have a greater part to play in delivering change. The research sector must not only do our part—we must lead the way.
