Association deal brings only benefits for researchers, despite governance questions, research leaders say
Canada joining the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme will deliver overwhelming benefits to researchers in both country and bloc, sector leaders have said.
Negotiations between the European Commission and the Canadian government ended on 24 November with an agreement that Canada will associate to the second pillar of the roughly €95.5 billion 2021-27 programme, signing off the deal in 2024. Pillar II is the largest part of Horizon Europe, with a budget of €53.5bn for collaborative research on global challenges and industrial competitiveness.
