Plans to reform doctoral training must not overlook those who deliver it, says Karen Clegg
There is much to welcome in UK Research and Innovation’s ‘new deal’ for postgraduate research, currently under development. UKRI’s initiative includes an emphasis, shared across the sector, on increasing the diversity of routes in and out of postgraduate education, broadening the student body, safeguarding mental health and wellbeing, and giving researchers an opportunity to gain a breadth of knowledge, experience and skills.
So far, though, there has been little mention of the people who will have to take the lead in delivering this: the supervisors.
