Over the past two decades, the UK higher education system has undergone a major transformation. In the process, vice-chancellors have emerged as preeminent figures, encompassing the management and leadership skills of a chief executive while being the principal academic and administrative officer.

The vice-chancellorship is a high-status, high-visibility role that is occasionally recognised with a knighthood and attracts plenty of followers within the university and among outside stakeholders. Universities represent the ideal environment for narcissists to shine.
